Finishing Guide, Pg 2
You can clean the grease and grime off an origional finish with cheesecloth and Military oX. It won't change the aged patina or color
of a collectable stock.
If you want to refurbish an existing finish on a stock that is not a valuable collector, in the event that you do not want to completely
strip it and refinish, use 320 or 400 wet-or-dry and some Military oX and wet-sand all the exposed surfaces of the stock and
handguards. Let it sit 30 minutes or so when finished wet-sanding, and then wipe all the oil off the wood, completely dry. This
improves appearance and protection. (NOTE: This will only work on oiled stocks. If you have a stock that has varnish or lacquer
surface coatings, it will have to be stripped and refinished before applying stock oil.)
That's the difference between "cleaning" and "refurbishing".
The third option, of course, is "refinishing". When you refinish, you completely strip the old finish off the wood, and after it has dried
completely, you can steam out any dents if you wish (or not, whatever), and then re-sand the bare wood with 180 grit regular
sandpaper. Dust the wood off with an air hose or pop it with a dry rag to achieve the same result, and apply Fairtrimmer's Military oX
stock oil according to the instructions that come in the package. Refinishing after stripping and finish-sanding is the same as
finishing new wood.
This third option, of course, will give you the most beautiful results by more clearly exposing the woodgrain; and the most protection
as penetration is more thorough and even, and curing more effective within the molecular structure of the wood for strength and
resilience.
Fairtrimmer’s Militry oX stock oil will do a wonderful job, but it is necessary to follow the instructions, and not try to use it in the same
fashion as other products that you may have been used to.
I am doing everything I know how to do in order to help everyone achieve good results with their stock work. I know it is difficult for
those of you who don’t have a lot of experience with this sort of thing. Work, learn and improve. I wish you all the best.
Note: ALWAYS KEEP THE PRODUCT WELL SHAKEN. Shake or stir it often during use.
Frank.
